In a joint statement, the Moroccan and Spanish foreign ministers and the European Commissioner for Home Affairs said that a “renewed agreement was agreed upon with the aim of facing, together, human trafficking networks, especially after the emergence of new and extremely violent operating modes adopted by these criminal networks.”
The statement included that “the new partnership could cover, in particular, support for border management, the strengthening of police cooperation, including joint investigations… as well as the strengthening of cooperation with the European Union agencies responsible for internal affairs.”
This agreement comes two weeks after the tragedy in Melilla, where around 2,000 sub-Saharan migrants tried to enter the Spanish enclave in northern Morocco. Twenty three people died in this incident while dozens of others, including Moroccan and Spanish police officers, were injured.
