Arab Region: 32.8 million people left their country in 2021 (IOM)

In 2020, about 15% of the world’s migrants and refugees, or about 41.4 million people, ended up in the region, while 12 Arab states received 14% of migrant workers.

When it comes to migration, the report revealed that about 32.8 million people left or were forced to flee Arab countries in 2020. Also, 44% of these migrants remained in the Arab region.

Prepared jointly by the International Organization for Migration’s Regional Office for the Middle East and North Africa, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), and the Regional Office for the Middle East and North Africa of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the report made recommendations for strategic changes in migration policies to facilitate regular migration processes, protect migrants, and organize voluntary return campaigns that fully respect migrants’ rights.

The report also called for facilitating access to justice for migrants and ensuring their right to hold passports, personal documents and to access health care.
