UNHCR: Crossings to Europe increases death tolls

UNHCR spokesperson Shabia Manto explained that while “fewer refugees and migrants are crossing the Mediterranean to Europe than in 2015, these journeys are becoming increasingly deadly.”

Published on 10 June and entitled “No End in Sight,” the report reveals that 3,231 people were reported dead or missing at sea in the Mediterranean and North West Atlantic last year, compared to 1,881 in 2020, 1,510 in 2019 and over 2,277 in 2018.

The UNHCR denounced the horror and dangers faced by refugees and migrants who resort to these journeys and called on States to adopt measures to ensure that refugees and migrants rescued at sea are landed in places where their lives and human rights are protected.
