The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) said that about 600 migrants are missing after they tried to reach Europe from Tunisia or Libya during the first three months of the year 2022. The organisation stressed that this is the highest death toll recorded since 2014.
The head of the IOM’s migrant protection department said that “the central Mediterranean is the deadliest migration route in the world.”
The IOM called on decision-makers to find alternatives to end these tragedies, recalling that Libya is not a safe place for migrants who are victims of horrific attacks and violations.
