At the opening of the plenary session, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said that more than 80% of migrants in the world move between countries in a safe and orderly manner, but he warned of the ‘heavy cost’ of irregular migration. He stressed the need to provide better protection for migrants in vulnerable situations, especially women and girls.
More than 15,000 people have been killed or missing since the adoption of the charter, the Director-General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the coordinator of the United Nations Migration Network, Antonio Vitorino, addressed the inequalities faced by migrant workers, including salaries and working conditions, and called for more efforts in fghting discrimination, racism, and xenophobia.
Abdullah Shahid, President of the General Assembly, for his part, explained that persistent global challenges continue to affect migration patterns and the living conditions of migrants. He stressed the necessity of providing legal paths that unregulated migration lacks now, in order to avoid a heavy human cost.
