On Wednesday, May 4, a judicial source told AFP that 4 irregular immigration boats sank off the eastern coast of the country, leading to the death of 24 irregular migrants, including children and women, while the coast guard rescued 97 migrants.
The source explained that the migration trips to Italy took place from April 22 to 30. It pointed out that in recent months, the bodies of 92 drowned migrants from sub-Saharan Africa had been recovered, stressing that the number of missing people was still large, given that the total number of migrants exceeded 200 who were on those boats before they sank.
In this context, the International Organization for Migration (IOM). stated that there were about 2,000 migrants missing or drowned in the Mediterranean in 2021, while in 2020, 1401 were recorded.
