International Workers’ Day in North African countries

On the occasion of May 1st, Moroccan trade union centres have called for the protection of workers and citizens from the increase of fuel prices and the cost of living by carrying out a thorough review of the government’s social policies and orientations.

 

Trade unions noted that citizens should not pay for the impacts of the continuous crises and that the conditions imposed by the current government formation cannot be maintained.

 

It is worth noting that the Moroccan government has announced that a new charter for social dialogue, dealing with the improvement of working conditions and an increase in salaries, will be soon submitted to trade unions.

 

Algeria: UGTA calls for improvement in living standards of employees

 

In a statement issued on the occasion of May 1st, the General Union of Algerian Workers (UGTA) warned that the deterioration of purchasing power and the value of salaries no longer allow workers to meet their most basic needs.

 

Welcoming the publication of the new salary scale for civil servants, the trade union centre called on the government to have new salary revisions in order to improve the social and professional conditions of civil servants.

 

Tunisia: UGTT calls for national dialogue before it is “too late”

 

On the occasion of International Workers’ Day, the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT) called for a comprehensive national dialogue that would be the only way to save the country, which is witnessing an unprecedented political and economic crisis.

 

The Tunisian government is preparing to launch a new measures called for by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to save public finances. These reforms could lead to a structural revision of the subsidy fund and a reduction in the number of public sector employees.
