Lebanon: Six migrants dead in boat sinking

The boat, carrying about 60 people, set out from south Tripoli on Saturday evening in an attempt to reach Cyprus. Authorities said bad weather and overcrowding led to the sinking of the boat, announcing the arrest of a suspect in the case.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said that about 1,570 people, including 186 Lebanese, left or attempted to leave Lebanon by sea between January and November 2021. Although most of those attempting to leave Lebanon by sea are Syrian refugees, the number of Lebanese is increasing due partly to the deteriorating living conditions in Lebanon and the economic crisis that has been worsening since 2019.
