The participants in the meeting demanded the cancellation of the kafala contract and considered it a form of slavery.
The National Federation of Trade Unions and Employees, for its part, had submitted a bill to the Ministry of Labour to abolish the kafala system and demanded the Human Rights Committee in the Lebanese Parliament to take a position, to end this practice that affects a large segment of domestic workers.
The federation renewed its call on the Lebanese government to ratify the International Convention 189 on decent work for domestic workers. The federation also called for the ratification of Convention 190 of the International Labour Organization (ILO) on harassment in the workplace, and the amendment of special legislation to be consistent with these conventions.
