East Asia and the Pacific region have the lowest rates in the world with about 11% of young people unemployed in 2020.
The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) and the International Labour Organisation’s (ILO) Regional Office for the Arab States have published a report showing that the mismatch between education and training programmes and the needs of the labour market, as well as the impact of the pandemic in several sectors such as tourism, real estate and textile have been impacted leading to large-scale dismissals in the region – on economic activities are among the most important causes of the rising youth unemployment rate.
