In its statement, the Joint Coordinating Committee of primary and secondary education trade unions in Mauritania, comprising 6 unions, denounced the Ministry’s indifference to teachers regarding the payment of travel grants for the past school year. The statement called on the ministry to initiate negotiations with all trade union parties and warned against the pressure that some regional directors are putting on teachers to dissuade them from observing the strike.
In its strike notice, the committee also called on the ministry to revise teachers’ salaries and grants, create new ones for field teachers, revise the status of primary and secondary school teachers, and give secondary school teachers tenure and all grants enjoyed by their colleagues.
