The Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights (FTDES) said that this sit-in comes in response to the closure of UNHCR reception centres in the region of Zarzis and the creation of a financial aid of barely three months. The FTDES stressed that this closure comes at a time when the Tunisian state is not respecting its commitments under the Geneva Convention relating to the status of refugees.
In a media statement, the FTDES spokesperson said that refugees and asylum seekers in Tunisia are victims of major violations and that the forum receives several complaints about acts of discrimination and police violence.
The FTDES called for the regularisation of the administrative situation of all refugees and asylum seekers in order to facilitate their obtaining residence permits, work contracts and social coverage.
