The National Committee for Women’s Affairs conducted a study showing that 42% of working women are victims of harassment in the workplace. The most common forms of harassment are verbal (51.6%), gestural (51.5%), physical (37.4%), and psychological (35.3%).
Lawyer Nour Al-Imam said that the legal texts related to “sexual harassment” are insufficient, arguing that the harasser should be dismissed from work and not asked to submit their resignation. She also called for efficient complaint policies that would prevent harassment in the workplace.
Doctor in Psychology, Dr. Fida Abu al-Khair, said that harassment is a psychological disorder and that ‘the victim’s silence contributes to it.’ However, she calls for heavy penalties on anyone who commits such a crime without any exception.
The study advises raising awareness against the phenomenon and means of protection.
