Trade unions call on all governments to ratify the Violence and Harassment Convention No. 190

Trade unions around the world joined together on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women to call on governments to ratify Convention No. 190 on violence and harassment. The campaign will run for 16 days, from 25 November to 10 December 2021.

The International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) has called on all governments to follow the example of the 9 countries (Argentina, Namibia, Somalia, Ecuador, Mauritius, Greece, Italy, Uruguay, and Fiji) that have ratified the Convention.

Twenty countries have started the process of ratifying the agreement, while France and the UK have already completed the necessary procedures for ratification. Spain, South Africa, Mexico, and Germany have also committed themselves to ratifying the convention soon.

ITUC and regional trade union federations, including the Arab Trade Union Confederation (ATUC) and its member organisations, and civil society organisations are currently organising campaigns in over 60 countries to call for a widespread ratification of the convention.

ITUC General Secretary Sharon Barrow said that “as the world continues to struggle with the COVID pandemic, women are facing an increase in domestic violence and gender-based harassment in the workplace. Prior to the pandemic, one in three women experienced gender-based violence, with serious consequences on their health, safety, and economic independence.”

This confirms the urgent need for all governments to ratify the convention in order to eradicate gender-based violence and harassment witnessed by millions of women workers regardless of their origin, social status, age, or physical condition.
