Shaher Saad, Secretary-General of the Palestinian General Federation of Trade Unions (PGFTU), stated that many workers, especially in the construction, agriculture, and hotel sectors, tend to work in the occupied territories. Working opportunities are decreasing in the West Bank. Many workers prefer to work in the occupied territories despite the poor working conditions they witness.
Saad stressed making more great effort to encourage these workers to return to their work and to meet their needs. Many workers lost their jobs and did not receive their compensation as agreed especially in the private sector after the sanitary crisis.
According to Saad, the implementation of the minimum wage scheduled for early next year will not be enough. The decision will only help the poor classes. Those who work in construction, agriculture, and industry sectors, are not part of the previous groups, but rather strong economic ones. The worker’s daily wage in these sectors is more than 150 shekels.
It is worth noting that the salaries of workers in the West Bank are not in sync with the cost of living. If workers do not receive better salaries, the Palestinian labour market will lose more manpower as many workers go to the occupied territories or choose to migrate.
