Lebanon: Gender discrimination against women workers in olive harvest

The municipality of Salhiyeh in Sidon, south Lebanon, announced the conditions for the employment of foreign workers in olive harvest. Priority will be given to foreign workers residing in the area. In a statement, the municipality proposed 80,000 pounds to men for each working day and 60,000 pounds for women, for an average of eight hours per day for both genders.

The decision has been condemned as discrimination against women and a violation of Article 26 of the Lebanese Labour Code, which prohibits gender discrimination between workers, whether concerning the “type of work, salary, employment, promotion, qualifications, and uniform.”

“Farmers are not subject to the labour law, and they do not benefit from the National Social Security Fund, so their working conditions are dealt with arbitrarily,” says Lebanese gender expert, Abeer Shabaro.
