The Centre for Trade Union and Worker Services (CTUWS) has reported that female domestic workers are among the most marginalised social groups. Although the profession is attracting more and more people, it is still difficult, almost impossible, to obtain accurate quantitative statistics on the number of women workers.
Historically, from 1952 to Labour Law No. 12 of 2003, and even up to the new proposed labour law currently under discussion, domestic workers are still excluded from the labour law, which does not recognise the profession as such but as a ‘personal relationship.’
CTUWS has pointed out that this situation persists in Egypt despite the fact that all international conventions recognise the need to apply labour standards to all workers in order to provide them with legal security.
