Lebanon: Heavy losses after the protests of workers in the Beirut port

The Syndicate of Importers of Foodstuff, Consumer Products, and Drinks in Lebanon warned, on September 8 of the repercussions of protests in the Beirut Port, and stated that the situation may lead to “a major food disaster and huge losses that will impact private sector companies.”

The Syndicate of Importers said in a statement that the protests in the company operating the container terminal (BCTC) in the port of Beirut, which have been taking place since last August, may lead to a threat in food security and huge losses.

The statement mentions that the strike of BCTC workers leads a complete disruption of imports and ships in the port.

The syndicate demanded resuming activities of the port and opening export and import channels. It, also, warned that the continued disruption of the work of the main administrations, including ministries and public institutions, which are related to import and export operations, will lead to a systematic destruction of the food sector and institutions.
