Lebanon: Deficit in the insurance fund of teachers

During a press conference organised on 6 September to mark the start of the new school year, the teachers’ syndicate spoke of the crisis in the insurance fund for public school education staff and pointed out that this scheme is no longer able to cover teachers’ health expenses.

The organisation explained that this deficit is due to the low value of the contributions paid by teachers in local currency (the official exchange rate is 1,500 pounds to the dollar), while the prices of hospitals and laboratories exceed the prices set by the supervisory authorities.

The insurance company of the public school educational staff has to reimburse large additional sums above the officially agreed upon rate. Teachers also have to pay additional fees to cover the difference in treatment costs. This situation was strongly denounced by the syndicate, which pointed out that teachers’ salaries have lost 90% of their value due to the financial and economic crisis the country is witnessing.

The syndicate called on the authorities to support the insurance companies so that they can continue to provide health services to their clients including teachers, civil servants, and pensioners.
