In early 2020, 90,000 complaints were filed to the Jordanian Ministry of Labour. The majority of these complaints were related to late payments, including chiefly issues affecting employees due to the closures imposed during the pandemic.
In this context, the ministry announced that it had issued around 22,000 infringement notices, of which more than 16,000 related to late payment. The Ministry also obliged 11,000 companies to pay their employees’ salaries and allowed 5,000 employees, out of a total of 9,500 who were made redundant, to return to their jobs.
Despite these figures, several organisations active in the field of workers’ rights have considered that the Ministry has, in some cases, simply fined the company without allowing the employee to have their rights, which has led several workers to take legal action.
