Jordan: The new labour law amendments were unwelcomed

Jordanian experts have criticized the government’s amendments to the labour law that have been submitted to the Jordanian House of Representatives. They demanded offering the articles for discussion and comprehensive amendments. The campaign included Tamkeen For Legal Aid and Human Rights, Phenix Centre for Economics & Informatics Studies, and the House of Workers.

The latter met on the 25th of August in a dialogue session entitled “Amendments to the Labour Law; Where to.” They discussed various problems including women’s work in hard labour, night shifts, and the times and jobs prohibited for women. They also addressed work permits for workers from the Gaza Strip, cancelling the obligation that workers should pay the work permits fees, and deporting workers.

The Phenix Centre director said that the amendments made in the last 25 years led to more violations against workers. Therefore, he addressed the weakness of trade union representation and the restrictions imposed on it. He called on the government to have a comprehensive social dialogue to have a bill at sync with current international labour standards.

A former member of parliament added that 95% of workers are not part of trade unions. She addressed the article on the recruitment of foreign workers, and stated that the proposed amendment will be unjust to workers, will contribute to white slavery, and the control of international corporations on them.
