Masarat and the Women’s Committee in the Jordanian Parliament, in cooperation with the German Friedrich Ebert Foundation, held a workshop on August 31 entitled “Empowering women parliamentarians and politicians in the media.”
The governmental participants presented the results of a survey conducted by the Department of General Statistics in Jordan, of active workers and unemployment for the third quarter of 2020, which showed that the unemployment rate among women reached 33.6% and 21.2% among men.
The statistics also showed that the rate of economic activity for Jordanian women is 14.9%, compared to 53.1% for males. These percentages reflect the different unemployment rates between the sexes.
It has been recommended that visions to increase the economic participation of women should be discussed, especially by the government, parliament, the private sector, and civil society institutions.
The representative of Masarat stressed the importance of the role played by the media and the need for women parliamentarians to be trained and to have the necessary tools to deal with the problem, in order to increase women’s political presence and their participation in decision-making positions.
