In a statement issued on August 2, the General Federation of Yemeni Trade Unions (GFYTU) at Hadhramaut called on the government and local authorities to discuss the workers’ demands in light of the deteriorating economic and social conditions in the governorate.
The federation demanded an increase in the salaries of workers, contractual workers, and retirees by 200%, the payment of annual grants, and an increase in the wages of workers in the private sector. The federation, also, called for integrating contractual workers in the institutions and address the issues of hiring sanitation workers and increasing their salaries.
The statement, also, called for providing security and occupational safety conditions for the workers of the electricity and water institutions, and obliging all institutions to provide health insurance for their workers.
The federation warned of the consequences of the interference of the security forces and the military authorities in the protests, similarly to what happened in the strike of port workers, social affairs, and water.
The statement announced that if the demands will be ignored, a general strike will take place on August 4.
