Jordan: Poor working conditions of quarry workers

A study conducted by Tamkeen for legal aid and human rights showed that 66.7% of quarry workers in Jordan are not registered in the social security system despite the fact that the sector witnesses work accidents almost on a daily basis. The study was conducted on a sample of 85 workers and revealed that 71% of them have verbal contracts. The study showed that most of these workers are migrants who live away from their families. They live in their workplace with unsanitary conditions and dangerous tools. It also showed that about a third of these workers have respiratory problems, joint pain, and nerve problems due to loading weights and working in dust are common.

The study stated that these issues are violations against the workers. The absence of supervision from the Ministry of Labour, the Social Security Corporation, and the Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission further encouraged these violations. The study recommended allocating a larger number of qualified safety inspectors in risky work sectors to carry out supervision. It also pointed to the need to find a new mechanism to register these workers in social security. Eventually, the study pointed to the importance of trade union work for the defence of the workers’ rights.
