On July 8, Philippine announced the repatriation of a group of Filipino women who flee to their embassy in Damascus. These 55 women were smuggled from the United Arab Emirates to Syria to work as domestic workers in the areas of Al-Assad regime.
It is worth noting that the American newspaper The Washington Post revealed that dozens of Filipinas who were brought to work in the UAE were victims of human trafficking and were initially smuggled to Syria as domestic workers. The newspaper’s report stated that Filipino workers were subjected to physical and sexual violence by their employers and were deprived of their salaries.
The Senate of the Philippines investigated the workers’ forged passports that were used for the trafficking of underage girls.
