Libya: Trade unions await the implementation of the salary increase decision

Last June, the Libyan government agreed to increase the salaries of workers in the health, education, oil sectors, the Ministry of Interior, and government departments.

The Libyan Doctors Syndicate suspended its partial strike in hospitals that had been planned in the beginning of last June to demand an increase in salaries, after this decision. The syndicate demanded that Parliament approve the government decision and implement it in the health sector.

The General Union of Oil Workers also expressed its satisfaction with the government’s decision, and had previously threatened to reduce oil production, as a reaction to the government’s failure to implement the decision to increase the salaries of sector workers issued in 2013.

In general, syndicalists are cautious about the government’s promises, which they see as still being threatened by the differences between the government and parliamentarians. They expect resuming protests in the event that the decision is not approved.
