Last Monday, the Egyptian Parliament approves a law allowing non-disciplinary dismissal of workers. Counselor Hanafi al-Jabali announced that the law is considered complementary to the constitution and requires the approval of two-thirds of the members of the Council. Therefore, the Council approved the bill.
On the basis of the new law, it will be possible to dismiss workers who presumably were proved guilty of sabotaging acts against the state. The new law will allow arbitrary and unlawful dismissals.
Some observers mentioned that the new law would help targeting terrorism-related crimes and the Muslim Brotherhood. However, it has been argued that the Egyptian legislation does not require such a law to fight terrorism and that the new law aims at sending terror among workers.
The Centre for Trade Unions and Workers Services (CTUWS) sent a letter to the president to urge him not to sign the law, providing a legislative reading of this law.
