The Centre for Trade Union and Workers’ Services (CTUWS) stated that the first half of this year “witnessed a remarkable labour awakening” in Egypt.
CTUWS quoted the Observatory of Labour and Social Protests of the Arab Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI), an Egyptian civil society organization, in its report for the first quarter of 2021, that 80 protests took place, including 49 social protests and 31 labour protests and professional protests. The observatory stated that 16 cases of suicide for economic reasons took place.
During the second quarter of this year, the network recorded 44 protests, including 25 labour protests.
