A new report published by The Christian Science Monitor addressed the reasons for the decrease in the number of irregular migrants leaving Libya for Europe from 200,000 per month in 2015 to 5,500 currently.
According to the report, the European Union (EU) has given Libya around $550 million to help stop the flow of irregular migrants. This has enabled Libya to have more vessels to intercept migrants’ boats and has relatively improved conditions in its detention centres.
The report also revealed that economic collapse and insecurity are driving thousands of workers to flee to Europe. Typically, these migrants end up in overcrowded Libyan detention centres where they are exposed to multiple violations of human rights.
