In a statement following the recent European Council meetings, Oxfam International criticised the European Union (EU) for shifting responsibility for migration management to third world countries by increasing mutual cooperation with countries of origin and transit.
The NGO’s policy advisor on the state of emergency criticised what he described as an “EU policy of blackmail” towards neighbouring countries. A policy that consists in conditioning development aid on the strengthening of border controls to prevent migrants from arriving to Europe.
Oxfam International recalled that the European strategy does not consider the rights of migrants fleeing wars and persecution.
