ILO alerts on the situation of workers in sub-Saharan Africa

In its latest report on Global Employment Trends, the International Labour Organisation (ILO) has warned about the situation of workers in sub-Saharan Africa.

According to the report, almost 90% of workers living in extreme poverty are in sub-Saharan African countries where a historic economic recession estimated at -1.9% has been recorded by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). In 2020, an additional 9 million workers lost their jobs in the region while supporting their families on less than $1.9 a day.

ILO estimates also indicate that more than 85% of workers in sub-Saharan countries are in the informal sector. These informal workers lost about 81% of their income in the first month of the pandemic.
