Iraq: Thousands of foreign workers deported

The Iraqi government has decided to deport thousands of foreign workers and to refer 400 private sector companies to the court, for failing to recruit a percentage of local workers.

The Minister of Labour explained that the deported foreign workers were not living in Iraq according to legal measures. The minister said that the private companies referred to the labour court have not complied with the rule that any company must employ a certain number of Iraqi workers. They have violated the law on retirement and social security.

It is worth noting that Iraqi law requires private companies to have 50% Iraqi workers. This rule is ignored by companies that prefer to hire foreigners for low wages.
