COVID-19 has impacted various sectors including phone shops. The social researcher and head of the Mauritanian Sociologists Forum stated that market workers complied with the first closure orders in March 2020, but violated them few days later, as a result of the absence of an alternative income.
Vendors were forced to display their goods in the streets of the capital under the constant threat of police. Some employers in the market were also forced to dismiss their workers or not pay them.
The researcher explained that small business owners in general were affected by the decline in demand for their products and the absence of any support from the government.
It is worth noting that dozens of young people go to the market for selling mobile phones in the centre of the capital.
