Lebanon: Economic crisis makes the conditions for Syrian refugee workers worse

The economic crisis in Lebanon has worsened the conditions of Syrian refugee workers, whose salaries continue to lose value due to the collapse of the national currency, while many others have lost their jobs.

Of 1.5 million Syrians living in Lebanon, several hundred thousand are active in the labour market, notably in agriculture, construction, hotels and restaurants, administration, hospitals, pharmacies, commerce, electricity, and sewing.

The majority of Syrians work as seasonal or daily workers and receive lower wages than the Lebanese without social security coverage. These workers are also forced to accept work in difficult conditions with long working hours.

Although the number of Syrian refugees in Lebanon has increased considerably due to the war in Syria, the president of the League of Syrian Workers in Lebanon said that Syrian workers have always been active in the Lebanese market, noting that after 2014, their work in the country has been subject to the rules of kafala.
