On May 8th, eleven education trade unions organized a strike in front of the Mauritanian Ministry of National Education, to protest against the ministry’s evaluation of teachers. The evaluation aims at determining the levels of teachers and divide them into categories according to their capabilities.
The teachers explained their refusal of the evaluation by saying that the results are not trustworthy and that it contradicts the agreement between the ministry and the trade unions of replacing the evaluation with continuous training. The protesters asked the ministry not to implement the evaluation decision. The trade unions stressed finding a solution based on the teachers’ needs of continuous training.
