On the occasion of the International Domestic Workers’ Day, Tamkeen for Legal Aid and Human Rights issued its yearly report that addresses the conditions of domestic workers in Jordan.
The report stated that the number of registered domestic workers in Jordan reached 33,777 in 2020, while the number of irregular domestic workers is about 30,000.
The report addresses the problems faced by migrant domestic workers, based on the complaints submitted to the association, including non-payment of wages, ill-treatment, long working hours, lack of privacy, denying them contact with their families, and taking their passports. The report added that the association received 114 complaints of physical abuse and 54 complaints of forced detention and denial of movement.
The association called for facilitating the transfer of the worker from one employer to another and activating the right to resign within the law. It called for implementing serious and practical laws that would prevent employers from exploiting domestic workers.
