Jordan: Construction workers denied social security programs during COVID-19

In the context of addressing the difficulties encountered by construction workers due to the disruption of projects since the start COVID-19, press websites cited the head of the Jordanian Labour Observatory, who mentioned that the pandemic revealed the shortcomings of the social security system, especially for the most vulnerable groups in the unorganized sectors including a large numbers of construction workers in Jordan.

The head of the Labour Observatory considered that the government’s response policies towards daily-wage workers were weak during COVID-19. Financial support was provided to only part of them and for short periods of time. Since many construction workers are not registered in the social security system, they did benefit from its programs during the pandemic.

The head of the Labour Observatory called for the need to reconsider social security policies, to cover all workers regardless of the nature of their work, especially since a large number of workers are unable to pay contributions and enrol in social security.
