A recent report by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) stated that unemployment affected more than half of migrant workers in Lebanon due to the economic crisis in Lebanon, in addition to COVID-19, and the explosion of the port of Beirut.
The organization indicated that 50% of the migrants surveyed are unable to access food and that they live in unsafe conditions, in inadequate housing with high rents and the threat of eviction.
The Director of the IOM office in Lebanon indicated that as the economic situation continues to deteriorate and job opportunities continue to be limited, migrants will be more vulnerable to exploitation and abuse, stressing the urgent need to expand the scope of voluntary return assistance services in Lebanon.
In this context, the official stated that the organization is seeking to obtain funding to expand the scope of its program to support the voluntary return of migrants to their countries.
It is worth noting that tens of thousands of domestic workers live in Lebanon, and most of them come mainly from Ethiopia, the Philippines, and Bangladesh. Many of them left last year due to the crisis.
