In late April, a huge fire broke out in Ibn Al-Khatib Hospital in Baghdad, which is one of three hospitals in Baghdad that receives critical cases of COVID-19.
The fire resulted from the explosion of the oxygen cylinder in the hospital leading to the outbreak of a fire in the cardiopulmonary resuscitation floor, causing the death of 82 and wounding 110 people. Around 90 people were rescued.
The investigations indicated that the cause of the fire was failure to comply with the safety requirements related to storing the oxygen cylinders and that the hospital is not equipped with fire detection and extinguishing system.
The Iraqi Prime Minister decided to arrest the Minister of Health, the Governor of Baghdad, and a number of health officials, referring them for investigation.
