Morocco: The UMT’s Statement on International Workers’ Day

133 years have passed since the events of New York, celebrated on the occasion of the International Workers’ Day. Workers still struggle for decent life conditions. On May 1, 2021, the Moroccan Workers’ Union (UMT) chose to commemorate the Tangiers workers event—victims of the absence of occupational health and safety conditions.

The statement mentions:

In the memory of them;

In honour of the lives of 28 workers, who died by drowning, Monday 08 February 2021, in the A-M textile factory in Tangiers, due to the lack of occupational health and safety measures;

In order to always remember the working class;

And in order to continue the struggle for decent work for the Moroccan working class:

On the occasion of the International Workers’ Day (May 1st) a monument was erected at the headquarters of the Regional Federation of Trade Unions in Tangiers.

In the statement, UMT called on the authorities to reveal the results of the investigations. The union, also, called for implementing occupational health and safety measures in all factories as well as taking the necessary measures to protect the workers’ lives. The statement, finally, stresses the need to denounce employers who do not respect occupational health and safety measures.
