Oman: Interaction with a Report on Migrant Domestic Workers

The Oman Human Rights Committee followed up on the issue of migrant domestic workers from Sierra Leone working in Oman after being addressed by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and by a report of the British newspaper The Guardian.

The report stated that workers were recruited through agencies from their countries to work in Europe. The potential workers; however, were not informed that they will be going to Oman as domestic workers. The newspaper cited domestic workers’ complaints about the ill-treatment they witness at work.

The committee confirmed all that has been mentioned in the report, adding that many workers run away after discovering the fraud of the agencies. In a lengthy report, the committee explained the legal procedures that allow migrant workers to report any violations.

The Oman Committee for Human Rights stated that it provides easier ways for those who would like to file a complaint either by receiving them at the committee’s headquarters, or receive complaints by e-mail, website, phone call, recorded communication, WhatsApp, or social media accounts.
