In a statement issued on 30 April 2021, UNICEF called on the Libyan authorities to release the migrants.
The UN agency explained that all migrants rescued off the coast of Libya are sent to crowded detention centres where they live in difficult conditions and lack medical care.
UNICEF recalled that 1,100 migrant children are held in these centres and called for their release.
