The Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT) denied any participation in the government’s negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMT).
In March 2021, the UGTT signed an agreement with the government to reform the subsidy and tax system and reform a number of public institutions. The Secretary-General stated that the UGTT has always called for tax justice which it considers as a pillar of social justice, adding that the reform of public institutions is necessary for their sustainability.
It is worth noting that the Tunisian government intends to participate in the negotiations with the IMT over its economic reform program in order to obtain support to solve the economic crisis in the country.
One of the most important conditions for the fund to assist Tunisia is setting up specific economic programs that all parties, including the government and social organizations, agree on. Also, it requires effective economic and financial reforms aimed at reducing the fiscal deficit, encouraging investment, and implementing wide range of reforms in the public sector.
