Tunisia: Solidarity with Coffeeshop Workers after Announcing a Curfew

The closure decision approved by the Tunisian government to confront the new COVID-19 wave was met with different reactions including the refusal to close coffeeshops during the month of Ramadan.

 

Tunisians showed solidarity with workers of coffeeshop and restaurant that will be closed at night due the announced curfew. They accused the government of not considering these workers’ conditions who will find themselves unemployed.

 

Activists on social media started a campaign to urge the government to change the curfew timing and to allow cafes and restaurants to be open.

 

An official in the National Chamber of Coffeeshop Owners stated that the sector is currently undergoing difficulties and called on the government to take measures concerning its economic crisis.

 

The Minister of Social Affairs announced that a grant of 200 dinars would be disbursed to workers of coffeeshops and restaurant workers and the tourism sector according to the database of the National Social Security Fund and in coordination with the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT) and the Tunisian Union of Industry, Trade, and Handicrafts (UTICA).
