The International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), the Arab Trade Union (ATUC), the Palestinian General Federation of Trade Unions (PGFTU), and other international trade unions participated in an online international solidarity meeting on Thursday, April 8th, under the title “Friends of Palestine.”
The meeting was opened by Mazen Maaiteh, President of ATUC, who highlighted the historical responsibility of trade unions as peace actors in the Palestinian cause. He praised the wide presence of trade union leaders from all over the world.
Mustapha Tlili, Executive Secretary of ATUC, highlighted the solidarity of ITUC with the Palestinian cause and its success in advocating the nomination of the PGFTU for membership in the directory board of the International Labour Organization (ILO).
Similarly, Stephen Cotton, Secretary-General of the International Transport Workers’ Federation (IFT), and Kemal Özkan, Secretary-General of IndustriALL Global Union, expressed the international trade unions’ commitment to the Palestinian cause in accordance with United Nations (UN) decisions.
In a lengthy intervention, and after greeting the participants, the Palestinian Prime Minister, Muhammad Shtayyeh, talked about the increasing violations committed by the occupation authorities in Palestine including oppressing Palestine’s history. He listed the crimes committed against Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, dividing the country and turning it into separate cities.
This meeting was an occasion in which Shaher Saad, Secretary General of the PGFTU, to talk about the labour situation and the violations against Palestinian workers by the occupation authorities. He, also, presented proposals for advocacy plans that the ITUC will follow for 2021.
ITUC, on the other hand, presented its plans to support Palestinian workers during this year and presented many proposals supporting these plans.
