Palestine: Calls to Open an ILO office in the Occupied Territories

The Palestine Trade Union Federation called on the International Labour Organization (ILO) to open an office in the occupied of Palestine to manage the conditions of Palestinian workers in the Israeli labour market. The Federation communicated this invitation to the representatives of ILO during a remote dialogue in which they mentioned that the aim behind opening this office is to supervise the conditions of Palestinian workers in the occupied territories and the violations of the Israel against Palestinian workers.

Regarding the conditions of Palestinian workers in light of the pandemic, a Palestinian trade union source explained that workers’ losses exceeded one billion shekels. These losses included, in particular, daily wage laborers and vulnerable groups of health care workers, women, youth, migrant workers, and persons with disabilities. The pandemic has caused complete or partial work closures in many sectors and businesses. All this resulted in thousands of workers losing their jobs.

The Israeli violations have been denounced including indifference to the safety of Palestinian workers in the crowded entry corridors at the Israeli military checkpoints, which caused the death of many workers. It is worth noting, in this regard, that the Committee against Torture considered overcrowding as a form of torture that leads to death and demanded its end as means of torture in prisons.
