In Tunisia, 39 migrants were declared dead by drowning, and 139 others were rescued off the coast of Sfax.
A spokesman for the Tunisian Ministry of Defence said that at least 39 migrants died on March 9th off the coast of Sfax, after the sinking of two boats on their way to the Italian island of Lampedusa.
The same source said that the Coast Guard managed to rescue 165 other people and indicated that the majority of them were from sub-Saharan Africa, who wanted to reach European coasts.
A spokesman for the National Guard, also, stated that 9 women and 4 children died.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees reported that more than 3,500 illegal immigrants had arrived in Italy by sea since the beginning of this year.
