Yemen: Several Migrants Killed and Injured in a Fire at an African Migration Detention Centre

Eyewitnesses reported that Ansar Allah (the Houthis) set fire to a detention centre of African migrants on March 7 in Sana'a, where twenty migrants died and about 170 immigrants were seriously injured.

The Houthis started the fire by bombing the centre to oppress a protest by the detainees who went on a hunger strike because of the detention conditions.

In this context, the International Organization for Migration indicated that the detention centre has about 900 detained migrants, most of them Ethiopians, and more than 350 of them were inside the ward that caught fire.

For its part, the Mwatana for Human Rights in Yemen confirmed that Ansar Allah are still detaining a number of injured migrants and preventing humanitarian aid from reaching them. The association called for an international investigation into the Houthi crimes committed against migrants and refugees.

The International Organization for Migration called for the urgent assistance of migrants who were victims of the fire, and demanded the release of all migrants detained in Yemen and the guarantee of a safe mobility after their release.
