Amnesty International called on the International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA) to tighten control on Qatar to improve the conditions of foreign workers working on the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Amnesty International acknowledged that Qatar has implemented several reforms for the benefit of foreign workers. These reforms, however, according to the organization, are not permanent because of the discussions currently taking place in the Qatari Shura Council. The council is currently discussing limiting workers’ rights when it comes to changing jobs or leaving the country.
However, official Qatari sources rejected the possibility of imposing these restrictions. Responding to Amnesty International, the Government Communications Office affirmed that Qatar is committed to working with international partners including Amnesty International adding that “reforming work is a complex task that takes time and requires effective and long-term solutions.”
The president of the International Football Association demands justice in evaluating Qatar’s human rights record and mentioned that there has been a significant progress in terms of workers’ rights without denying that more can be done.
