Algeria: Railway Workers Protest

The National Federation of Railway Transport Workers went on strike on March 9th to support the railway workers in Ahras and Annaba and all workers who were victims of arbitrary measures taken against them by the administration including the five workers who were recently fired in Annaba.

The protests, which were described as successful in all the areas, entered a new phase. A strike on March 1st to reject the arbitrary measures and restrictions on trade union work by the company’s management and to object to decisions being taken to stop giving social loans to workers took place.

The administration mentioned that the railway transport company stated that the general management of the company had set up a program to correct and save its conditions and for this purpose carried out audits in various activities, and made it clear that the audit process revealed many deficiencies and violations that it is working to address in accordance with the stipulations of the law. It, also, expressed its readiness to negotiate in order to solve the problems.
